Gibby’s love for postcards started when as a child she started receiving them from both her father and grandmother. Nowadays Gibby sends thousands of postcards a year!
Why does Gibby do this?
First of all because getting fun mail is awesome (no matter how old you are!)
Second, Gibby knows first hand how isolating dyslexia can be. Growing up she desperately wanted to know someone else who was dyslexic. She started the Dyslexic Pen-Pals program so that kids don’t have to feel that way. This is a fun, low stress way to get to know a fellow dyslexic. It also provides an opportunity where reading and writing can be enjoyable and without the corrections of a red pen.
I’m not sure my kid will want to respond.
No worries there. They can absolutely respond, but are under no obligation to do so. Gibby will send the one postcard and then respond to any she receives. However, if your child really enjoys the postcard, but doesn’t feel ready to respond after just one reach out and Gibby will be happy to send another one.
What does Gibby write about?
It’s pretty random honestly! She explains how she is dyslexic and that it gives us superpowers, but doesn’t harp on the subject opting to explain where the postcard comes from as well as other bits of randomness.
But my kid’s handwriting is terrible and/or they have trouble spelling….
No problem! Gibby feels strongly that this is a safe place to communicate without the red pen from school! Gibby’s postcards often have mistakes in them as well. She believes that it’s helpful for kids to see an adult write things like ‘me’ instead of ‘be’ showing that you can still be successful despite these tiny mistakes. This provides for an excellent reminder that your ability to read and write don’t have any connection to how intelligent you are.
